Beginning farmers face serious obstacles to starting a farm.
High land costs, access to capital, and understanding how to run a profitable business are just a few of the barriers facing new and aspiring farmers.
At Taproots Farm Hub, our mission is to cultivate the next generation of Treasure Valley farmers by providing a supportive incubator that offers shared land, equipment, infrastructure, and market access.
We are dedicated to fostering sustainable farming practices through mentorship and collaboration, empowering aspiring farmers to thrive in direct-market agriculture and contribute to a vibrant local food system.
The high cost of farmland in the Treasure Valley means that people who want to farm, often can't. It's simply too expensive to start a farm.
Beginning farmers have to pay for land, finance pricey farm infrastructure and equipment, and purchase seeds and fertilizers before ever they earn a penny. Add rising costs into the mix, and it's no wonder that beginning farmers cite land access and start-up costs as the top barriers to starting a farm.
With the Treasure Valley estimated to lose more than half of its farmland by 2100 and the Idaho farmers averaging over 56 years old, there's a critical need to develop new farmers. Not only do farmers need the skills to operate a successful farm business, they also need secure, long-term access to farmland and help affording the costs of starting a farm.
That's where Taproots comes in.
How?
Offering long-term land access with shared equipment, infrastructure, and marketing to beginning organic farmers through a land-based farm incubator.
Preserving the Treasure Valley's agricultural legacy by keeping farmland in long-term agricultural use.
What's next for Taproots? Right now, we're developing our Board of Directors, exploring potential land opportunities, and hosting events to connect with farmers and community members.
